In March 2003, the ETH Zurich, the University of Zurich, the University of Basel and Syngenta signed an agreement for long-term research collaborations. Each year, professors and group leaders of the PSC have the possibility to apply for PhD or Post doc fellowships. An Advisory Committee, which consists of representatives of the ETH Zurich and the two universities as well as Syngenta, selects the projects for funding. The Steering Committee of the PSC subsequently approves the choices of the Advisory Committee. The evaluation criteria for the applications include

• the scientific quality and originality of the research projects
• the inter-university and interdisciplinary collaboration, and
  
• the scientific qualifications of the applicants.
